"L’existence d’un tel être" is part of a series of horses behind the bar, a recurring and defining motif in the artist’s oeuvre. This time, it is the horse itself that is confined. Its animality is rendered all the more palpable by its iron shoes, and all the more disquieting as its head, pressed against the bar, projects into the viewer’s space. Through the resolutely contemporary composition of this work, Joël Person invites us to contemplate the transience of freedom and to question the very nature of the dialogue that may be established with a horse whose eyes are, quite literally, barred.
